Whole-Home Surge Protection
Give connected appliances another layer of protection against damaging voltage surges.

What’s included — Whole-home surge protection
A surge can be brief and still damage sensitive equipment. Whole-home surge protection is installed at the switchboard to help limit transient overvoltages entering the installation. It is different from an RCD, which protects against certain electric-shock risks, and different from a breaker, which protects wiring against excessive current. We assess the supply, earthing and board before selecting a surge protective device. The aim is sensible risk reduction, not a promise that every appliance will survive every electrical event.
Switchboard assessment
Check board condition, supply configuration and space for suitable surge protection.
Earthing checks
Assess the protective path on which effective surge protection depends.
Device selection
Choose a surge protective device and coordination arrangement suited to the installation.
Installation and testing
Connect protection to its specified arrangement and check the completed work.
Status indicator handover
Show you the indicator, maintenance considerations and the limits of the protection.
A switchboard surge protective device diverts surge energy through a suitable protective arrangement and earthing path. Correct selection and installation matter: the supply configuration, device type, protective coordination and connection lengths affect the result. We check available board space and existing equipment, then explain the proposed protection and its limits. Sensitive electronics may also benefit from compatible point-of-use protection. Protection needs to be coordinated rather than assuming a cheap plug-in strip and any switchboard device will work together automatically.
Signs you need this — Whole-home surge protection
- You have expensive electronics or a home office on the household supply.
- Appliances have failed after storms or electrical supply disturbances.
- You are upgrading the switchboard and want coordinated surge protection assessed.
- An existing surge device shows a failed or replacement indicator.
- You want to understand whether plug-in protection is enough for your equipment.
Switching events, disturbances on the supply and lightning-related activity can produce transient voltages. Homes with computers, smart appliances, home offices and charging equipment have more electronics exposed than they once did. An old board may lack space or suitable earthing for a simple addition. Flickering lights, persistent high voltage or repeated supply problems are not automatically surge events: they require diagnosis, and a surge device is not a substitute for fixing a loose neutral or another dangerous electrical fault.
Upfront pricing for whole-home surge protection
Upfront pricing — quoted on site before any work starts.
Your quote reflects access, the existing installation, equipment and any necessary supply coordination. We explain the agreed scope before you decide. Optional work is discussed separately.
What happens on the day
We inspect the board and explain the selected device before arranging a safe isolation. The work includes mounting and connecting the protection to the specified arrangement, checking the installation and labelling it. We show you the status indicator and explain when replacement or investigation may be needed. Some devices sacrifice their protective element after sufficient stress, so their condition matters over time. If a storm has already caused damage, tell us what stopped working; we may need to assess the underlying fault as well as future protection.

Whole-home surge protection — frequently asked questions
Does surge protection replace safety switches?⌄
No. Surge protective devices limit transient overvoltage, while safety switches respond to certain leakage-current conditions. Both have distinct roles. A modern board may need appropriate RCD, overcurrent and surge protection, but installing one type does not establish that the other protections are present or that the wiring is safe.
Will whole-home protection stop a direct lightning strike?⌄
We do not promise complete protection against direct strikes or every extreme event. Protection needs depend on the building and exposure; a switchboard device is not a complete lightning-protection system. We explain the intended level of protection and any relevant limitations before quoting, so expectations match the actual installation.
Do I still need a plug-in surge protector?⌄
Selected electronics may benefit from additional, compatible point-of-use protection. That is a coordination question, not a blanket requirement to buy more power boards. We can discuss the equipment you want to protect and the installation arrangement. Never overload a power board or use one with damaged leads or sockets.
Can a surge device fix flickering lights?⌄
Not necessarily. Flickering can result from a fitting, circuit connection or supply fault, including conditions that need urgent investigation. Surge protection does not repair a bad connection or regulate persistent voltage problems. Tell us when the flicker happens and whether it affects the whole house so we can assess the cause.
Does a surge protective device need maintenance?⌄
Its status indicator should be checked according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A device may need replacement after it has absorbed enough stress, even if normal power remains available. We show you what the indicator means and how to arrange a check without opening the switchboard or touching live equipment.
Areas we service for whole-home surge protection
Whole-home surge protection in Sutherland Shire
We provide whole-home surge protection across the Sutherland Shire from our Caringbah base. Brick-veneer and post-war homes can combine original electrical infrastructure with years of additions, so we check the existing arrangement before deciding what the new work needs. Access through a roof space, garage or underfloor area can change the practical scope. Tell us about previous renovations and any inspection findings when booking. We plan the agreed work around the actual property rather than assuming every Shire home has the same wiring or supply.

Whole-home surge protection in St George
Our Caringbah-based team has set service days across St George for whole-home surge protection, with 24/7 emergency cover when an electrical fault needs urgent attention. The area’s brick-veneer and post-war homes may have older boards, limited access or later extensions that need to be considered alongside the requested job. We discuss circuit condition, supply capacity and the route for any new equipment on site. A booking request lets us review access and the proposed scope before confirming a suitable visit; it is not an automatic appointment confirmation.

Whole-home surge protection in Eastern Suburbs
We also provide whole-home surge protection on set service days across the Eastern Suburbs, with 24/7 emergency cover. The area’s 1920s–60s housing stock can include overhead mains and original switchboards alongside modern renovations. Those features make a site assessment worthwhile before adding equipment or altering the supply. We check what is present at your property rather than assuming its age means it needs a full replacement. Masonry construction, constrained access and coastal exposure may influence the installation plan, and we explain any necessary preparation before work starts.
