What’s included — Consumer mains upgrades
Consumer mains are the conductors connecting the property’s supply arrangement to its main switchboard. They are not the same as an individual circuit feeding a kitchen outlet. An upgrade may be needed because the existing cable is damaged, the route is unsuitable or the household requires a different supply capacity. We inspect the complete arrangement before proposing a cable change, including the network connection, metering interface, earthing and board. Replacing one cable does not automatically increase the capacity available from the network.
Supply and load assessment
Check the existing arrangement and what the household actually needs to run.
Consumer mains design
Plan cable size, route and protection to suit the assessed installation.
Approval coordination
Identify network and metering requirements before promising an installation date.
Authorised supply work
Carry out agreed isolation, replacement and connection work within our ASP authorisation.
Testing and documentation
Verify the installation and complete applicable service and compliance paperwork.
As a Level 2 ASP, we handle everything from the street to your switchboard, no second contractor for the authorised supply-side electrical scope. We assess the existing consumer mains, loading, route and protection, then identify approvals and any coordinated metering work needed. Single-phase and three-phase arrangements have different requirements. The proposed design needs to fit the installation and network conditions, not simply use a larger cable because a new appliance has a large rating on its label.
Signs you need this — Consumer mains upgrades
- An electrician has identified deteriorated or undersized consumer mains.
- You are planning a substantial load increase or three-phase change.
- The supply cable or termination shows damage or overheating.
- A renovation needs the mains route altered.
- A network defect notice identifies the consumer mains or connection arrangement.
Older properties can have ageing insulation, altered cable routes or consumer mains originally sized for a much smaller electrical load. Renovations, electric cooking, air conditioning and vehicle charging can change demand. Heat damage, loose connections or a damaged enclosure need investigation even if the lights are still on. A circuit tripping inside the house does not prove the consumer mains need replacement; we diagnose the problem and distinguish supply faults from internal circuit issues before quoting.
Upfront pricing for consumer mains upgrades
Upfront pricing — quoted on site before any work starts.
Your quote reflects access, the existing installation, equipment and any necessary supply coordination. We explain the agreed scope before you decide. Optional work is discussed separately.
What happens on the day
We confirm the approved scope, access and planned power interruption before isolating the supply through the required authorised process. Work can include new consumer mains, terminations, protective arrangements and related board work where agreed. We test the completed installation and complete the documentation applicable to the job. Metering appointments or network approvals may affect the schedule, and we explain that before booking. Tell us about essential equipment and access restrictions so the outage can be planned sensibly rather than discovered at the door.

Consumer mains upgrades — frequently asked questions
Are consumer mains the same as house wiring?⌄
Consumer mains connect the supply arrangement to the main switchboard. Final subcircuits run from the board to lights, outlets and appliances. Both need suitable design and protection, but replacing one does not automatically repair the other. We explain which part of your installation is affected and why the proposed work is necessary.
Will larger consumer mains give me more power?⌄
Not by themselves. The available network supply, service protection, metering and switchboard also need to support the intended capacity. We assess those parts together and identify approvals. A larger cable may be part of the solution, but it is not permission to draw more power than the connection allows.
Do consumer mains upgrades need a Level 2 ASP?⌄
Work involving the authorised connection, disconnection or service arrangement needs the appropriate Level 2 ASP authorisation. We assess the exact scope and coordinate it accordingly. Internal electrical work and network-facing work have different boundaries, so the plan needs to show how safe isolation and reconnection will be handled.
Will my power be off during the work?⌄
A planned interruption is normally needed for safe replacement and connection work. We explain the expected arrangement after assessment and coordination, rather than promising a universal outage length. Tell us about medical equipment, refrigerated stock or other essential loads so any necessary contingency can be discussed before the date is agreed.
Can the cable route change during a renovation?⌄
It may be possible, subject to a suitable design, access and any network or metering conditions. Concealed routes, excavation and building works need to be coordinated before walls or landscaping are finished. We assess the proposed route and explain the associated scope instead of moving supply cables as an informal last-minute alteration.
Areas we service for consumer mains upgrades
Consumer mains upgrades in Sutherland Shire
We provide consumer mains upgrades across the Sutherland Shire from our Caringbah base. Brick-veneer and post-war homes can combine original electrical infrastructure with years of additions, so we check the existing arrangement before deciding what the new work needs. Access through a roof space, garage or underfloor area can change the practical scope. Tell us about previous renovations and any inspection findings when booking. We plan the agreed work around the actual property rather than assuming every Shire home has the same wiring or supply.

Consumer mains upgrades in St George
Our Caringbah-based team has set service days across St George for consumer mains upgrades, with 24/7 emergency cover when an electrical fault needs urgent attention. The area’s brick-veneer and post-war homes may have older boards, limited access or later extensions that need to be considered alongside the requested job. We discuss circuit condition, supply capacity and the route for any new equipment on site. A booking request lets us review access and the proposed scope before confirming a suitable visit; it is not an automatic appointment confirmation.
Hurstville · Kogarah · Bexley · Blakehurst · Carlton · Kingsgrove · Ramsgate
Consumer mains upgrades in Eastern Suburbs
We also provide consumer mains upgrades on set service days across the Eastern Suburbs, with 24/7 emergency cover. The area’s 1920s–60s housing stock can include overhead mains and original switchboards alongside modern renovations. Those features make a site assessment worthwhile before adding equipment or altering the supply. We check what is present at your property rather than assuming its age means it needs a full replacement. Masonry construction, constrained access and coastal exposure may influence the installation plan, and we explain any necessary preparation before work starts.
